Turlach Ur pulled out all the stops for its June 26 Thursday Music in the Park
concert in Grinnell. Threatening weather brought the show indoors, but landed
the band in Grinnell College's acoustically superb Sebring-Lewis Hall. From
the opening numbers with the Grinnell Community Band to the foot-stomping finish,
Turlach Ur gave the audience the varied and exciting evening of music and dance
that it has come to expect every summer.
The band was pleased to perform not only with the community band, but also with
New House (flutist Rebecca Stuhr and guitarist Mark Schneider) and guest Scottish
snare drummer Malcolm Rosenberger. Malcolm was in town to instruct participants
in the 2nd Annual Turlach Ur Scottish Drumming Clinic. No fewer than five of this
year's clinic participants performed in the concert, along with one 2007 participant!
A special treat for the audience was watching Mecca and Madison Morrison skipping
nimbly between their roles as drummer (Mecca) and bagpiper (Madison) and
Turlach Ur highland dancers! Both girls started and continue as prize-winning dancers,
but have recently undertaken highland instruments as well. Hats off to the Morrison
girls.(Their proud Pipe Sergeant dad, Brad, does a solid job too!)
Don't miss Turlach Ur's Grinnell concert next summer, and check our web site regularly
for other opportunities to hear the band.
The band expresses its sincere thanks to the Grinnell Area Arts Council, the concert
series founder and continuing sponsor, and to Iowa Telecom, a key series sponsor
and special sponsor of the Turlach Ur show.
