Urchin Drum Corps Ready to Open Winter Storm Concert!

Most Turlach Ur fans already know that, on Saturday January 14, the Turlach Urchin (youth band) drum corps will be opening what many consider the foremost Highland music concert in the world, the Winter Storm concert in Kansas city. The Urchins won the honor when they finished first in the 2010 Winter Storm drum fanfare contest last January. While the kids' band has opened the Winter STEAM party for the past two years, this will be there first time on the big stage at the actual concert ... a stage they will share with many of the greatest pipers and drummers in the world.
Of course, the Winter Steam performance is still on too! As before, all the Urchins ... pipers and new drummers too ... will rock the room and get the party under way.
There are still a few tickets left for the concert. http://www.mhaf.org/ Make it a weekend in Kansas City and come support your favorite pipe band!

Turlach Ur to Perform with The Chieftains!
|
 |
On March 3, 2012, Turlach Ur will perform with the legendary Irish band, The Chieftains. The best known and most successful Celtic music group of all time, The Chieftains are recognized for bringing traditional Irish music to the world's attention. 2012 is the band's 50th anniversary year and their celebratory world tour includes performances not only at London's Royal Albert Hall, New York's Carnegie Hall and Washington's Kennedy Center, but also at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa. |
The Chieftains have won six Grammy awards and recorded more than 40 albums, many featuring collaborations with the greatest artists from musical genres quite distinct from Irish folk music. Musically closer to home, they long have featured Scottish musicians in their performances, including pipe bands in larger venues. Iowa is fortunate to have The Chieftains stopping in Iowa between its 2012 Chicago and Twin Cities dates, and Turlach Ur considers itself very fortunate indeed to have been selected as the pipe band that will share the stage with them in Cedar Falls.

Turlach (TUR – lock)-a large fire
Ur (ur)-beautiful, flourishing, fresh, new, vigorous
Founded in 2007 and based in Grinnell, Iowa, the Turlach Ur Pipe Band now boasts a roster of 25 pipers and drummers. We will add two new pipers in the summer of 2010 and have another six piping and drumming students working hard. More than half of our band members are junior players, ranging in age from ten to seventeen. Together, they make up Turlach Ur's increasingly popular youth band, the Turlach Urchins.
Turlach Ur holds weekly band practices and monthly group lessons at which all levels come together for instruction in small groups (and lunch in a big group!) We pride ourselves on playing great music and having a great time. The two come together in our concerts, which easily are among the most fun and imaginative pipe band shows anywhere.
